Faults on Halstead boilers and plant rooms
Lockout on a market morning
Note the display and reset once. Leave it alone if there is a smell of gas. A High Street boiler quiet since Thursday may be stopped by a condensate trap that has dried or flooded, a fan that fails its air prove, or ignition that drops straight out. Gas Safe registration 985448 covers mains gas and commercial LPG, and our OFTEC trained engineers attend oil burners.
Heat in one room and not the next
A warm foyer and a cold aisle at Townsford Mill, a cold auditorium on Butler Road, or a cold pool hall on Colne Road, usually means a shut valve, a dead pump, or a second boiler in lockout. Name the cold room and say whether anything else is still alight.
Office warm, factory floor cold
On Bluebridge the office boiler and the warehouse heater are often separate. Name the cabinet or tube, and its fuel, when only the floor has stopped.
A gauge that will not stay up
Read a High Street or Head Street cellar gauge with the case closed, and say if the system was cold or had been hot. A falling figure means water is leaving at a seal, a fitting, a vent or the safety valve.
The burner looks ready and does nothing
The hold can be the clock, a weather compensator, or a link from the fire alarm or the extract. A school on Parsonage Street or Trinity Street can still be sitting on a holiday programme after the break.
Commercial sites we cover in Halstead
Halstead is a small market town with a traditional High Street, schools, care homes, churches and chapels, and light industry on the Bluebridge estate. We work on High Street shops and offices, schools, care homes, churches and industrial units, including sites on Bluebridge Industrial Estate and the workshops and units around the town.
Halstead is close to base, so we can usually reach commercial boiler breakdowns there quickly.
Halstead is a short run south from Clare through the Hedinghams, and the A131 links it to Braintree and Sudbury. A team of over 10 local engineers to call on covers Halstead and nearby Sible Hedingham, Braintree, Coggeshall, Sudbury.
Typical sites: schools, care homes, offices, hotels, pubs & restaurants, factories & warehouses, churches & community halls and buildings run by commercial landlords & managing agents.
The A131 runs from Sudbury Road and Head Street along the High Street, and crosses the Colne at Bridge Street beside Townsford Mill. Shops and cafes put the boiler downstairs or in a back store. Park on Chapel Street or Butler Road. St Andrew's stands where the Sudbury and Colchester roads meet.
Townsford Mill is the former Courtauld silk mill, now an antiques centre. One aisle can be cold while the hall is warm. The building manager holds the plant-room key. Use the street door. Market days are Friday and Saturday, so a boiler off since Thursday may lock out before the stalls are up. There is a school on Parsonage Street and another on Trinity Street, west of the river by Holy Trinity. The surgery on Factory Lane West has its boiler in a service room.
Bluebridge Industrial Estate is about three-quarters of a mile east, off the A1124 Colchester Road, on avenues that include First Avenue and Sixth Avenue Business Park. A Sixth Avenue unit often pairs a loading door with a small office, and the fuel can differ from the older factory next door. If only the floor is cold, name the cabinet or radiant tube, the unit and any signing-in rule.
Colne Road leisure centre has a 25-metre pool, a learner pool, a sports hall and a gym. Say if the fault is the showers, the hall or the pool-hall air. A care home on Dame Mary Walk, off Colchester Road, needs its lounge named when that room must stay warm. The Empire Theatre on Butler Road may need the auditorium warm for a show. See the warehouse, school, care home, hospitality and sectors pages.
The A131 runs about 9 miles north to Sudbury and about 8 miles south to Braintree and the A120. Gosfield is west. Greenstead Green and Stisted are south. To the north are Little Maplestead, Great Maplestead, Gestingthorpe and Pebmarsh, and the A1017 continues by Sible Hedingham and Castle Hedingham to Great Yeldham. East, the A1124 passes Earls Colne to White Colne, Chappel and Wakes Colne, about 6 miles out, then Colchester. Colne Engaine sits just north of that road.
What to tell us when you call
Site name and address in Halstead, the fuel (gas, oil or LPG), the boiler make if you know it, what has happened (lockout code, no heat, leak), and how we get into the plant room. That lets us give you an ETA and bring the right parts. Out of hours is fine: we run 24 hours, 365 days. For a full picture of our emergency service see 24/7 emergency commercial boiler repair.
- Postcode and place: High Street, Townsford Mill, Factory Lane West, Colne Road, Dame Mary Walk or a Bluebridge avenue.
- Fuel of each appliance, including a floor heater that is oil or LPG while the office is gas.
- Make, model and the display text. Leave the covers on, and say if anyone reset it.
- How long it has been off, and if a market morning or a show is close.
- Door or shutter, and who will meet the engineer. Chapel Street and Butler Road serve the centre.
Smell of gas
Empty the premises and wait outside. Do not press the reset or use a switch. From outside, ring the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. After that call, use 0800 0996 007 for the commercial boiler.
Oil on the yard
If oil is running out of the tank area, leave the burner switched off and say whether a bund is fitted. That job is for our OFTEC trained engineers.
What happens on a call-out
Ring 0800 0996 007. We log the Halstead postcode, that the site is commercial, and who will open up. The engineer comes from the Clare base at CO10 8NN.
The rating plate, pressure gauge and fault display are checked before a cover is undone. A repair counts as finished only after a full firing cycle. If a part is still to come, the panel note names the rooms that are cold.
Gas, commercial LPG and oil in Halstead
Mains gas feeds the High Street, Bridge Street and much of Bluebridge. On a newer Sixth Avenue unit, check the fuel, because the office and the warehouse may differ. Commercial LPG toward Gosfield or the northern lanes remains Gas Safe registration 985448. See LPG commercial heating. Bunded tanks and other oil burners are attended by our OFTEC trained engineers. Details are on the commercial oil heating page.
Phone for a breakdown. Plant that stands idle between market days, shows or school holidays is arranged as a separate planned preventative maintenance visit. Shorter phone notes are in the Halstead boiler guide.
Records once heat is back
Write on a sheet kept by the panel: the date, the display code, the cause, anything replaced, and which circuit you left switched off.
Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, the duty holder for these premises has to keep the gas appliances, flues and pipework in safe condition.

Will you fix it on the first visit?
That is the aim. We carry van stock for common commercial parts; if a part has to be ordered we leave the plant in the safest workable state.
Are you local to Halstead?
Yes. Halstead is a short drive from our base in Clare, CO10 8NN.
What does a call-out cost?
Rates can be negotiated. Call or text and we will talk it through before we attend.

Yes. The High Street, Bridge Street, Townsford Mill, Factory Lane West, Colne Road, Dame Mary Walk and Bluebridge, including Sixth Avenue, are included. Give the door and the keyholder.
Are the villages around Halstead on the same run?
Yes. Quote the postcode and the street or avenue. Engineers travel from Clare, CO10 8NN. Gosfield, the Maplesteads, Greenstead Green and the Colne villages toward Chappel can be on the same run.
The Sixth Avenue floor is cold and the office in the same unit is warm. What do we report?
Tell us the office is warm and the warehouse floor is not. Name the floor heater, whether a cabinet or a tube, and its fuel when that is separate from the office boiler. Include the avenue and the unit.
Who attends oil on a yard toward Gosfield or the Maplesteads?
Oil appliances are handled by our OFTEC trained engineers. Mention a bund if the tank has one, and say if oil is on the concrete. Gas and commercial LPG at the same yard stay on Gas Safe registration 985448.
Can we send a photo of the display after we have phoned?
Yes. Phone 0800 0996 007 and open the job first. Call or WhatsApp 07947 578332 can then carry a picture of the fault display and the rating plate.
