Commercial gas work, not domestic
Commercial gas work covers different appliances, higher outputs and different standards from a home boiler. Fast Commercial Boiler Help only does commercial and industrial work. Gas Safe registration number 985448.
What our commercial gas engineers do
- 24/7 breakdowns: lockouts, ignition failures, no heat and gas valve faults
- Servicing and planned maintenance
- Boiler replacement and installation with commissioning
- Gas safety inspections and records (commercial CP12)
- Tightness testing and purging of commercial gas pipework (IGEM/UP/1)
- Emergency gas isolation and safe reinstatement of plant
- Warm air, radiant and unit heaters and gas-fired water heaters
- Plant-room ventilation assessments and gas interlock fault-finding
Commercial heating engineers as well
Most calls are not just gas: a pump has seized, a pressurisation unit has failed or a plant room is leaking. Our engineers deal with the whole heating system, so you are not left waiting for a second trade. We also cover commercial oil and LPG plant.
Typical sites: schools, care homes, offices, hotels, pubs & restaurants, factories & warehouses, churches & community halls and buildings run by commercial landlords & managing agents.

How commercial gas work differs from domestic
- Bigger appliances. Commercial boilers, warm air heaters and water heaters often run at many times the output of a home boiler, and are often installed in groups that share a flue, controls and a plant room.
- Larger gas installations. Commercial pipework is longer and wider, may run at higher pressures and has to be tested and purged to the IGEM/UP/1 standards rather than the simpler domestic procedure.
- Safety controls you do not find at home. Plant rooms and kitchens use gas interlocks, solenoid valves, emergency stop buttons and mechanical ventilation that must work together before the gas can be turned on.
- Different standards. Larger installations are designed and checked to BS 6644 and IGEM/UP/10, which cover flues, combustion air and plant-room ventilation for non-domestic appliances.
- Separate qualifications. Gas Safe registration is split by type of work, so an engineer needs the right commercial categories for the appliances on your site, not just a domestic registration.
How to check you have the right gas engineer
- Check the business is on the Gas Safe Register. Our registration number is 985448.
- Ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card. The back of the card lists the work they are qualified to do. Look for commercial or non-domestic categories that match your appliances.
- Ask what records you will get. A competent commercial engineer leaves written results, such as gas safety records, tightness test readings and notes on any defects found.
- Make sure they look at the whole system. Many gas appliance faults are caused by ventilation, controls, pumps or water flow, so an engineer who only looks at the burner may miss the real problem.
What happens when our engineer arrives
- Talk to your site contact about what has stopped working, any error codes and any recent work on the system.
- Check it is safe to work. We confirm the gas supply, ventilation and flues are safe before running any appliance.
- Find the fault. We test gas pressures, ignition and flame supervision, combustion readings, controls and interlocks, and the heating system around the appliance.
- Repair or make safe. Where we can fix it on the visit we do. Where a part has to be ordered, we leave the plant in the safest condition that still keeps the building running where possible.
- Prove and record. We recommission the appliance, check combustion and safety devices, and give you written findings.
If we find a dangerous fault we follow the Gas Industry Unsafe Situations Procedure, explain clearly what we found and why, and agree the next step with you.
Your gas safety duties as an employer or building manager
- Under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, employers and anyone in control of business premises must keep gas appliances, flues and pipework in a safe condition, and only use a Gas Safe registered business for gas work.
- In practice that means regular servicing, a yearly gas safety inspection and a written record kept on site.
- Landlords and managing agents who are responsible for gas appliances in buildings they let need to agree in writing who maintains what, so nothing is missed between landlord and tenant.
- Keep plant-room ventilation grilles clear, never leave a gas interlock overridden after a nuisance trip, and fit carbon monoxide alarms where gas appliances are in or near occupied rooms.
A planned preventative maintenance contract covers these checks on a fixed schedule. The work is carried out by our team of over 10 local engineers, based at CO10 8NN near Sudbury.
If you smell gas on site
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 straight away.
- Turn off the gas at the emergency control valve or the plant-room emergency stop if it is safe to reach.
- Open doors and windows, do not operate electrical switches, and move people away from the area.
- Once the supply has been made safe, call us on 0800 0996 007 to trace and repair the leak, test the pipework and safely restore the heating.
Questions we get asked
Are your engineers Gas Safe registered for commercial work?
Yes. Fast Commercial Boiler Help is Gas Safe registered, number 985448, and does commercial gas work only. You can check our registration on the Gas Safe Register, and every engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card listing the types of gas work they are qualified to do. We are happy for your site team to check it on arrival.
Can I get a commercial gas engineer out of hours?
Yes. We run 24 hours, 365 days. Call 0800 0996 007 or WhatsApp 07947 578332 and we will give you an ETA. If you can smell gas, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first so the supply can be made safe, then call us to repair and reinstate the plant.
Can a domestic gas engineer work on our commercial boiler?
Not unless they hold the right commercial qualifications. Gas Safe registration is split by type of work, and commercial boilers, larger pipework, catering equipment and warm air heaters each need their own categories. A domestic-only engineer is not qualified for most non-domestic plant, so check the back of their Gas Safe ID card before they start.
Do you cover my area?
Primary coverage is Suffolk, Essex, Cambridgeshire and East Anglia from our CO10 8NN base, with some East London jobs call-first. Send your postcode and we will confirm, and tell you roughly how quickly an engineer can be with you.
Do you work on oil and LPG as well as natural gas?
Yes. Natural gas and LPG work is carried out under our Gas Safe registration 985448, and our engineers are OFTEC trained for commercial oil-fired boilers. Pumps, controls, pressurisation and plant-room work are covered whatever the fuel.
What paperwork do we get after a visit?
You get a written record of what was tested, what was found and what was done. Servicing and inspections include the gas safety record for each appliance, tightness testing includes the test results, and any unsafe situation is recorded with the action taken. Everything is written so it can go straight into your building maintenance file.
Will the gas have to be turned off while you work?
Sometimes. Repairs to a single boiler or heater can usually be isolated locally while the rest of the building keeps its gas supply. Work on the main installation pipework or meter needs the supply off for a short time, so we agree the timing with you in advance and avoid opening hours or mealtimes where we can.
Do you test and certify commercial gas pipework?
Yes. We carry out tightness testing, strength testing and purging of commercial gas pipework to IGEM/UP/1 and IGEM/UP/1A, for example after alterations, after a gas leak repair, or when a new appliance is connected. Results are recorded and handed over with the job sheet.
How do I book or get a quote?
Call 0800 0996 007, WhatsApp 07947 578332, or email [email protected] with the site, fuel and what you need. Photos of the boiler data plates and the gas meter help us arrive with the right parts. Rates can be negotiated.
