Commercial water heater repair West Mersea — what to check before you call

West Mersea is the island's town, known for its oysters and the seafood restaurants, cafés and fish sellers along the waterfront, with sailing and yacht clubs, holiday and caravan parks across the island, pubs, shops, a school and a church. Many of these businesses are busiest in summer, then run quieter hours through the winter. The island is reached by the Strood, the causeway from the mainland, which can flood at high spring tides, so getting on and off at certain times needs checking against the tide tables.

A commercial kitchen needs a steady supply of hot water for washing up, hand washing and cleaning, and it usually comes from a direct-fired gas storage water heater, a calorifier heated by a boiler, or an unvented cylinder. When the water runs cold, the usual causes are a lockout on the water heater or boiler, a faulty thermostat or ignition, a failed circulating pump on the hot water return, or scale on heat exchangers and elements, as the water in this part of Essex is hard. Salt air near the waterfront can also corrode flue terminals and outdoor pipework faster than inland. Before you call, note the appliance make and model, any fault code or warning light, whether it is gas, oil or electric, and whether the temperature and pressure relief valve or the expansion relief valve is discharging. Don't keep resetting a water heater that locks out again, and don't block or cap a discharging relief valve. Stored hot water should be kept at 60°C or above for legionella control, and unvented hot water systems should only be worked on by competent persons. If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the emergency control valve if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. All gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers (FCBH Gas Safe registration 985448).
