Warm air heater repair Isleham — when a gas, LPG or oil heater won't fire

Isleham is a large East Cambridgeshire village on the edge of the Fens, close to the Suffolk border, with Soham, Fordham, Freckenham, West Row and Mildenhall all nearby. The River Lark runs past to the north-east, where the marina is, and the village is known for its small Norman priory church, looked after by English Heritage. Much of the working building stock around it is agricultural and light industrial: farm workshops and grain stores, fruit and vegetable packhouses, machinery and vehicle repair units and boat sheds, alongside the shops, pubs, school, church and halls in the village itself.

Big open buildings like these are rarely heated by radiators. They tend to use cabinet or suspended warm air heaters, sometimes radiant tube heaters running along the roof, fired on mains gas where it reaches, LPG from a tank on outlying sites, or oil. The common faults are an ignition lockout where the flame is not proven (often an ignition electrode, flame sensor or gas valve problem), the overheat limit thermostat tripping because filters are clogged, the fan has failed or the heat exchanger is dirty, a fan that runs but gives no heat, and a heater that short-cycles. Dust from grain, straw and packing work clogs filters quickly, so keep the area around each heater clear of stored materials. A cracked heat exchanger can let combustion products into the air stream, which is why an annual service with a combustion and carbon monoxide check matters. Before you call, note the make and model from the data plate, the fuel, whether the fan runs, any lockout light or fault code, and whether one heater or several have stopped, because several at once points to the gas, LPG or oil supply rather than the heaters. Don't keep resetting a heater that locks out again. If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the emergency control valve or the LPG tank if it is safe to do so, open doors, avoid switches and naked flames, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 for mains gas or your LPG supplier's emergency number for tank or bottled gas. All gas work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers (FCBH Gas Safe registration 985448).
