Village hall oil boiler Cavendish — when frost or a lockout stops the heat

Cavendish sits on the River Stour between Clare and Long Melford, with thatched cottages around the green, St Mary's church, a primary school, village hall and pubs on the High Street, and farmland and small workshops out toward Clare, Glemsford, Hartest and Long Melford. Many of the larger buildings still run on oil because the gas main does not reach every plot, so an oil boiler or oil-fired warm-air heater is common in halls, schools and rural units.

Oil boilers fail for different reasons from gas ones. A tank that has run low, water in the oil, a blocked filter or nozzle, a failed photocell or ignition electrode, a seized fuel pump, or a flue terminal blocked by leaves or a bird nest will all put the burner into lockout. In frost, outdoor oil lines and condensate pipes can gel or freeze, and a hall that sits cold all week then needs a sharp warm-up for a booking often shows up a weak pump or a boiler that will not hold flame. Before you call, note the boiler and burner make and model from the data plate, the oil tank level if you can see the gauge, any lockout light or fault code, whether the burner tries to fire, and when the building is next needed. Press reset once at most. Repeated resets on an oil burner can leave unburnt fuel in the combustion chamber. Keep frost protection on when the building is empty, and leave a clear path to the tank, filter and boiler cupboard for the engineer. If you smell oil vapour strongly or see a leak from the tank or lines, keep people clear, avoid naked flames and call us rather than trying to reset. All gas work on dual-fuel or gas plant is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers (FCBH Gas Safe registration 985448); oil work goes to OFTEC trained engineers.
