Burwell is a long fen-edge village between Newmarket and the National Trust's Wicken Fen, with Burwell Lode running out into the fens. Check that the fire valve hasn't tripped and the isolation valve is open, and note whether the burner tries to fire and locks out, runs with smoke, or does nothing at all. Don't keep pressing the reset button: on a pressure-jet burner, repeated resets can leave unburnt oil in the combustion chamber, which is a fire risk. Tell us the boiler and burner make (Grant, Firebird and Riello are common), the output from the data plate, the fuel, the tank size and when the boiler was last serviced. Commercial sites storing more than 200 litres of oil are covered by the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, which require secondary containment such as a bund. If you find a leak, stop the supply if you can, contain the oil with absorbent or sand, keep it out of ditches, the lodes and other watercourses, and report pollution to the Environment Agency incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
