Flooded boiler repair Ashdon — getting heating safely back after the River Bourn rises

Commercial engineers covering Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire

Winter gas safety: smell gas? Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999. For commercial boiler breakdowns call 0800 0996 007.

Flooded boiler repair Ashdon is a real concern because the village sits on the River Bourn, a tributary of the Granta, and has flooded badly more than once; in June 2007 a month's rain fell in about an hour and flash flooding went through the village. Call 0800 0996 007 or WhatsApp 07947 578332.

Do not restart a boiler that has been under water

Any gas or oil appliance, control panel, pump or wiring centre that has been in floodwater must stay off until a competent engineer has checked it. Water and silt get into burners, gas valves, fans, printed circuit boards and flue joints, and an appliance can seem to fire normally while combustion is unsafe. Oil tanks can shift or take in water, and oil lines can be strained or cracked. Turn the power to the boiler off at the isolator if it is safe to reach, and do not try to dry out controls yourself.

Once the water has gone, we inspect and test the boiler, burner, controls and flue, flush silt out of the heating system where needed, and tell you plainly which parts can be cleaned and which need replacing. For larger premises we also check pressurisation units and pumps sited low in plant rooms, which are usually the first things to go under.

Ashdon's working buildings and the trip from Clare

Ashdon is a parish of about 900 people roughly four miles north-east of Saffron Walden, close to the Cambridgeshire border, and includes Steventon End and Church End. The Rose and Crown on Crown Hill, a Grade II listed 17th-century coaching inn, is the last of the village's pubs. There is a primary school, the volunteer-run village museum and tea room on Church Hill, and the restored post mill on Camps Road.

From Clare CO10 8NN it is about 16 miles via Haverhill and Steeple Bumpstead, usually around 30 minutes. After a flood, roads near the Bourn may be closed, so tell us which approach is open. The desk confirms an engineer and an arrival window before dispatch.

Flooded boiler repair Ashdon — what to tell us when you call

Tell us how high the water reached against the boiler or plant, how long it stood, whether the power has been off, the boiler or burner make and the fuel, and whether your insurer needs a written report. Photos taken before anything is moved are useful for the insurer and for us.

Oil-fired plant is handled by OFTEC trained engineers. Gas appliance work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers only (Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998). If anyone smells gas, get people out of the area, do not touch electrical switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
