A late-night economy and a medieval market
Romford's night-time economy is larger than that of any other metropolitan centre in Greater London, with a big share of floorspace given to bars, pubs, restaurants and cinemas, and much of it trades late. For a kitchen or a bar that means hot water has to be there from prep in the afternoon until the last glass is washed, often from a water heater or a boiler and calorifier in a cellar or a cramped back room. Two of the pubs in the Market Place are listed buildings, and the market and nearby streets form a conservation area, so plant is often tucked away where flue routes are awkward.
Away from the centre the work changes. The Bates Industrial Estate, also called The Old Brickworks, on Church Road in Harold Wood (RM3) has warehouse and workshop units plus serviced offices at the Bates Business Centre, close to the A12 and junction 28 of the M25. Along Rom Valley Way (RM7) there are retail warehouses, and leisure sites such as the Brookside Theatre, the greyhound stadium and Sapphire Ice and Leisure have their own heating and hot water loads.
Romford is outside our home area, so we agree the visit first
Romford is about 47 miles from Clare CO10 8NN, usually a little over an hour by the A12 and Gallows Corner, where the A12 meets the A118 and the start of the A127. Because it is beyond our home patch in Suffolk and north Essex, the desk confirms an engineer, an arrival time and the rates on the phone before anyone travels. East London is part of the area we cover, so we will always tell you plainly whether we can attend.
Inside the ring road, parking is the main obstacle: much of the Market Place, South Street and the High Street are pedestrianised. Tell us which service road or car park to use, who will meet the engineer, and whether the plant is in a cellar, a roof void or a back room.
Commercial heating engineer Romford — what to tell us
Give the business name and RM postcode, the type of premises, what has stopped (heating, hot water or both), the boiler or water heater make, and any fault code or lockout light. Say whether you are trading tonight, because a bar or restaurant without hot water may have to close. A WhatsApp photo of the appliance data plate and the flue helps us check parts before the drive.
Gas appliance work is carried out by Gas Safe registered engineers only (Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998). If anyone smells gas, get people out of the area, do not touch electrical switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first.
