Ridgewell is a north Essex village on the A1017 between Haverhill and Halstead, south-west of Clare. The former RAF Ridgewell airfield east of the village is now mostly farmland, with the airfield museum on part of the old site. Much of the parish has no mains gas, so pubs, shops, farm offices and workshops here tend to run on oil or LPG. With those fuels, many winter breakdowns are not boiler faults at all but supply problems: an empty tank, a delivery that could not get in, or a frozen regulator. This guide covers how to keep an off-grid commercial heating system fed through the winter and what to do when it stops.

LPG: run-outs, regulators and relighting
- Running out: if an LPG tank runs dry, air can get into the pipework. Suppliers commonly require the installation to be tightness tested by a Gas Safe registered engineer before anything is relit, so a run-out usually costs a delivery and a call-out. Watch the tank gauge, or use the supplier's remote monitoring if they offer it.
- Regulators: the regulator at the tank reduces the pressure for the building. If its vent is blocked by ice, snow or debris, the boilers can lose pressure and lock out. Keep the area around the tank clear, and do not adjust or tamper with the regulator yourself.
- Delivery access: a tanker needs a clear route to the tank. Parked vehicles in a pub car park or a locked farm gate can mean a missed delivery in the coldest week.
Our commercial LPG heating page covers LPG boilers and heaters.
Oil: tank levels, water and filters
Commercial oil boilers usually stop for one of three reasons: the tank has run low, water has got into the tank and reached the filter, or the filter has blocked. Check the tank level with a dipstick or gauge, check for water in the bottom of the tank (water-finding paste on the dipstick shows it), and keep a record of delivery dates. Order early in the winter, because lead times get longer when the weather turns. If the boiler has locked out after the tank ran low, the burner may need bleeding and resetting by an engineer. Repeatedly pressing the reset button can flood the combustion chamber. Our OFTEC trained engineers cover commercial oil plant, and the commercial oil heating page has more detail.
What to tell us when you call
Ridgewell is a short drive south-west of our base at 4 Market Hill, Clare (CO10 8NN). It is an Essex address, so give the full A1017 or lane address. When you ring 0800 0996 007, have ready:
- the fuel (LPG, oil or mains gas) and the tank level, if you can read it;
- when the last delivery came and whether the tank ran low recently;
- any lockout light or code on the boiler, and whether heating, hot water or both have stopped;
- where a van can park and who holds the key to the plant room and any tank compound.
Gas work, including LPG, is done under Gas Safe registration 985448. After the call, photos of the boiler badge and the tank gauge by WhatsApp on 07947 578332 help us bring the right parts. If the boiler has failed outright, see our commercial boiler repair Ridgewell page. Off-grid sites that want the boiler, burner and fuel line checked before winter can use planned maintenance, and our frost protection guide covers keeping plant safe in a hard frost.
Common questions
Do you work on homes in Ridgewell? No. Fast Commercial Boiler Help works on commercial buildings only, such as pubs, shops, farm offices and workshops.
The tank has just been refilled but the boiler still will not fire. Why? After a run-out, oil systems often have air in the fuel line, and LPG systems usually need a tightness test before relighting. Both need an engineer.
What should I do if I smell gas? Get everyone out of the building, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, then call us.
