Commercial boiler and plant-room help in Greenstead Green

Winter gas safety: smell gas? Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999. For commercial boiler breakdowns call 0800 0996 007.
Greenstead Green is a small village just south of Halstead in north Essex, in open farmland toward Earls Colne and the Braintree countryside. Commercial premises around here tend to be small: farm shops and cafés, kennels and stables, workshops, holiday lets and rural offices. Many of them depend as much on reliable hot water as on heating, so this guide focuses on commercial hot water: what to look out for, what the safety rules expect, and what to tell us when it goes wrong.
Hot water in small commercial premises
A café, farm shop kitchen, staff washroom or holiday let may run from a boiler with a hot water cylinder, a direct-fired water heater, or an unvented cylinder. Common faults include:
- water that is only warm, or runs cold after a busy spell, which often means a failed immersion, thermostat or heating coil, or a cylinder too small for the demand;
- water dripping from a pipe outside the building or from the cylinder pipework, which can point to a fault on an unvented cylinder's safety valves and needs a qualified engineer;
- a gas-fired water heater locking out, often caused by a flue, ignition or flame-sensing problem.
Do not adjust or take apart unvented cylinder safety valves yourself. Note what you can see and call us on 0800 0996 007.
Keeping hot water safe
If you run a business, you are responsible for managing the risk of Legionella in your water system. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance (ACoP L8) generally expects hot water to be stored at 60°C or above and to reach at least 50°C at the outlets within about a minute. Where the people using the water are vulnerable, thermostatic mixing valves may be needed to prevent scalding at the tap. A water heater that can no longer reach temperature is a safety issue as well as a comfort one. Our engineers can check stored and outlet temperatures while they are on site. More detail is on our commercial water heater repair page.
What to tell us when you call
Greenstead Green is well inside our roughly 30-mile radius from CO10 8NN in Clare, reached via Castle Hedingham and Halstead. Have these ready when you phone:
- the business name and how to get a van to the plant, especially down a farm track or through a yard;
- whether it is the hot water, the heating, or both that has failed;
- the fuel (mains gas, LPG or oil), the make of the boiler, water heater or cylinder, and any fault code;
- how many outlets or staff depend on the hot water, so we know how urgent it is for you.
Gas work is under Gas Safe registration 985448, and oil plant is looked after by OFTEC trained engineers. After you have called, photos of the data badge and controls by WhatsApp on 07947 578332 help us bring the right parts.
Questions we often get
Do you work on home hot water systems? No. We are commercial only. If the hot water serves a business, such as a café, a let, a yard or an office, we can help.
Can you service the water heater with the boiler? Yes. Ask when you book, and if you have several pieces of plant we can set up planned maintenance so they are all looked after on one schedule.
What if I smell gas? Leave the building and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, then call us.
