Winter gas safety: smell gas? Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999. For commercial boiler breakdowns call 0800 0996 007.
Great Yeldham sits on the A1017 in north Essex, between Ridgewell and Sible Hedingham, on the road from Haverhill to Braintree. Its businesses are mostly roadside: shops, the pub, offices and workshops off Bridge Street and Church Road, plus farm buildings around the parish. In premises like these, a lot of "the heating is not working" calls turn out to be the controls, not the boiler: a timer that is an hour out, a thermostat in the wrong place, or a programmer that lost its settings in a power cut. With the clocks going back on Sunday 25 October 2026, this guide covers how to get the controls right before you call an engineer.

The clock change and your timer
Many commercial heating systems still run on a mechanical time clock or an older programmer that does not change itself when the clocks go back. If yours is not adjusted, the heating runs an hour out of step: on the first Monday after the change it comes on and goes off an hour earlier than you think. A pub or shop that opens at 9am can find the building warm at 8am and cooling by the afternoon. After the change, check:
- the time shown on the boiler programmer, any separate time clock, and the hot water timer;
- any time switch on warm air or radiant heaters in a workshop, which is often separate from the boiler's;
- the date and time on a building management system or smart controller, if you have one.
The same checks are worth doing after any power cut, since some clocks lose their time or fall back to factory settings when the power goes off.
Thermostats, frost protection and opening hours
- Room thermostat in the wrong place: a stat next to a shop door, a hot kitchen or a sunny window reads the wrong temperature and switches the heating off too early or leaves it running. If the building is uneven, say where the stat is when you call.
- Times that do not match the business: a pub with late opening and a shop with early opening need different heating periods. Remember the building takes time to warm up, so start the heating before staff arrive.
- Frost protection: a frost thermostat brings the heating on when the building gets very cold, even when the timer is off. Make sure it is set and working before the first hard frost, especially in workshops and outbuildings. Our frost protection guide explains more.
- Radiator valves and zone valves: one cold room may simply be a closed valve or a zone valve that has stuck, not a boiler fault.
When it is the boiler, not the controls
If the time and settings are right and the controls are calling for heat but nothing happens, check the boiler for a lockout light or fault code and the pressure gauge on sealed systems. Do not keep pressing reset: report the code instead. Gas work is done under Gas Safe registration 985448, oil-fired plant is covered by our OFTEC trained engineers (see commercial oil heating), and pubs and cafés are covered on our hospitality heating page. For a failed boiler, see our commercial boiler repair Great Yeldham page. Upgraded controls, such as a seven-day programmer or optimum start, can be discussed at a service visit.
What to tell us when you call
Great Yeldham is an Essex address reached from our base at 4 Market Hill, Clare (CO10 8NN) via Ridgewell. When you ring 0800 0996 007, have ready:
- the premises name and whether access is off Church Road, Bridge Street or straight off the A1017;
- a parking note that keeps the van off the main road;
- what the controls show: the time, the heating periods, the thermostat setting, and any code on the boiler;
- the fuel (mains gas, oil or LPG) and who holds the plant room key.
After the call, a photo of the programmer and the boiler badge by WhatsApp on 07947 578332 helps us bring the right parts. A yearly service on planned maintenance includes a check of the controls.
Common questions
Do you work on homes in Great Yeldham? No. Fast Commercial Boiler Help works on commercial buildings only, such as shops, pubs, offices and workshops.
Can you change the timer settings for us? Yes. If you are unsure how to set your programmer or time clock, we can set it to your opening hours at a visit and show staff how to change it.
The heating comes on but the building never gets warm. Is that the controls? It can be a thermostat in the wrong place or heating periods that are too short, but it can also be a pump, air in the system or an undersized boiler. Tell us what you have checked and we will advise.
What should I do if I smell gas? Get everyone out of the building, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, then call us.
