Commercial engineers covering Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire
Winter gas safety: smell gas? Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999. For commercial boiler breakdowns call 0800 0996 007.
Hundon is a West Suffolk village about three miles from our base in Clare, which makes it one of the quickest places for us to reach. Its commercial heating is in buildings that are used on and off rather than all day: the village hall, the church, the pub and shop on North Street, and farm workshops on the edge of the parish toward Brockley Green. Buildings like these have their own pattern of faults, and most of them come down to how the heating is controlled when the building is empty.

Heating a building that is only used some of the time
A village hall booked for a Tuesday evening and a Saturday party needs to be warm for those hours and protected from frost the rest of the week. The usual problems are:
- Not enough warm-up time: a cold hall with solid walls can take two to three hours to warm. If the timer starts the heating at 6pm for a 7pm booking, the room is still cold when people arrive and the boiler gets the blame.
- Controls nobody understands: several committee members change the timer, or the heating is left on all week after an event. A simple booking-led timer or an optimiser with a frost setting saves fuel and arguments.
- Lockouts after long idle spells: a boiler that only runs a few hours a week can fail to light on the first cold evening because of a sticking pump, a worn ignition electrode or low pressure.
- Stale hot water: kitchen and toilet outlets that are rarely used should be flushed weekly, and any stored hot water kept at 60°C, in line with HSE Legionella guidance.
Write down when faults happen (for example, only after a few days empty, or only in a hard frost) and any code on the boiler. That record makes the first visit far more useful. Our churches and community halls page and the Cavendish village hall oil boiler guide cover similar buildings.
Farm workshops and off-grid fuel
Farm workshops and yards around Hundon are often off the gas grid, running oil or LPG boilers and space heaters. Oil boilers commonly stop after a tank delivery stirs up sludge and water that then block the filter, or when the tank gauge reads wrong and the tank runs dry. Our OFTEC trained engineers handle commercial oil plant, and commercial LPG should be named when you call. If a boiler has failed outright, our commercial boiler repair Hundon page covers the breakdown service.
What to tell us when you call
Hundon is reached from Clare in a few minutes along the lanes north of the town. When you ring 0800 0996 007, have ready:
- the building name and postcode, where to park, and who holds the key (hall committees often have a named keyholder);
- when the building is next booked or open, so we can fix it before then;
- what has failed (no heat, no hot water, a lockout light or a leak) and the fuel (mains gas, oil or LPG);
- whether the fault only happens after the building has been empty for a while.
Gas work is done under Gas Safe registration 985448. Photos of the boiler badge and the timer or controls by WhatsApp on 07947 578332 after the call help us bring the right parts. Halls and churches that want one visit a year to cover the boiler, controls and hot water can use planned maintenance, and our guide to what a commercial boiler service includes explains the checks.
Common questions
Do you work on homes in Hundon? No. Fast Commercial Boiler Help works on commercial buildings only, such as village halls, churches, pubs, shops and farm workshops.
The hall is cold at the start of every booking. Is the boiler too small? Not always. Check first how early the heating comes on. Starting it earlier, or fitting an optimiser that learns the warm-up time, often fixes it without new plant.
What should I do if I smell gas? Get everyone out of the building, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, then call us.
