Winter gas safety: smell gas? Call National Gas Emergency on 0800 111 999. For commercial boiler breakdowns call 0800 0996 007.
Castle Hedingham is a north Essex village on the B1058 below Hedingham Castle's Norman keep, and its commercial heating is mostly in old buildings: pubs, tea rooms, shops, a church and visitor-facing premises in a tight historic core, plus the heritage railway site at the Colne Valley Railway nearby. Many of these places are busy in the visitor season and much quieter in winter. That pattern, plus old walls and cellar plant rooms, shapes the faults we see and the questions worth asking before you call.

Boilers in historic and listed buildings
Commercial boilers in Castle Hedingham often sit in a cellar, a rear store or an outbuilding because there was nowhere else to put them. That brings its own issues:
- Air for combustion: a cellar plant room needs the ventilation the boiler was installed with. Blocked or covered vents, or stock stacked against them, can cause poor combustion, lockouts and a carbon monoxide risk.
- Flue routes: flues through thick walls or old chimneys need checking at every service. In listed buildings a new flue position may also need consent, so replacements take more planning than a like-for-like swap.
- Condensate disposal: condensing boilers produce acidic condensate that has to be piped away. In older buildings that pipe often runs a long way or outdoors, where it can freeze and lock the boiler out on cold mornings.
- Damp plant rooms: damp cellars shorten the life of controls, wiring and pumps, so expect us to flag corrosion at a service.
If the boiler has failed, see our commercial boiler repair Castle Hedingham page. Our guides to carbon monoxide and flue safety in commercial kitchens and church heating in listed buildings cover related work.
Seasonal premises: closing for winter and opening again
Visitor premises that close or cut their hours in winter still need their heating looked after. A building left completely cold can freeze pipes, coils and condensate lines. Setting the boiler to frost protection rather than switching it off at the mains, keeping some background heat in the coldest rooms, and checking pressure once a week will prevent most winter damage. Our frost protection guide explains the settings.
Before reopening in spring, book a service and a hot water check. Little-used taps and showers should be flushed, and stored hot water brought up to temperature, before staff and visitors use them. A pub or tea room that runs out of hot water at lunchtime on its first busy weekend usually has a cylinder, immersion or boiler priority problem that a pre-season check would have found. Our hospitality heating page covers kitchens and bars.
What to tell us when you call
Castle Hedingham is about 9 miles south of our base at CO10 8NN in Clare, usually reached via Great Yeldham and Sible Hedingham. It is a separate village from Sible Hedingham, so give the Castle Hedingham address. When you ring 0800 0996 007, have ready:
- the premises name and postcode, where a van can stop in the village lanes, and who holds the key to the cellar or plant room;
- what has failed (heating, hot water or both) and any fault code or lockout light;
- whether the building is listed, and the fuel (mains gas, oil or LPG; many outlying sites are off the gas grid);
- opening times, so we can work before or after customers where possible.
Gas work is done under Gas Safe registration 985448, and oil-fired plant is covered by our OFTEC trained engineers. Photos of the boiler badge and the flue by WhatsApp on 07947 578332 after the call help us bring the right parts. Seasonal sites suit planned maintenance timed for the closing and reopening dates.
Common questions
Do you work on homes in Castle Hedingham? No. We work on commercial buildings only, such as pubs, shops, tea rooms, churches and visitor sites.
Should we switch the boiler off while we are closed for winter? Usually not. Leave it on frost protection with the system pressurised, and ask us before emptying any part of the system.
What should I do if I smell gas? Get everyone out of the building, call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999, then call us.
